Ms. W-N. announced today that Lyle Castle will become associate provost. This promotes him from his position as shadow Dean of Science and Engineering (a position akin to that of the political officer on a Soviet warship) to a position above the nominal interim Dean.

Mr. Castle's appointment gives him the political legitimacy of Nguyen Van Thieu; one would expect a historian like Ms. W-N. to understand why this is important. His personal background makes him well-suited to serve in a self-selecting non-meritocratic autocracy where loyalty is far more important than vision.

It is, however, refreshing to see Ms. W-N.'s implicit confession that she is ignorant of science and engineering.

This is only possible because grading standards at ISU are so low (I have documentary evidence). The Vailas administration is determined to improve "retention" by giving good grades to students who should be failed. The word has gone out to the Deans and Chairs. who make sure that faculty comply.

All students are hurt by this policy, because these students who should not be in the classroom slow everything down. Less material is learned at less depth.

I am not making this up.

How could the College of Science and Engineering "move too fast?" Every one of those hires was approved by someone in the financial food chain. Nor could even generous start-up expenses account for $1.6Million.

The idea that an instructor standing in front of a full classroom is costing ISU money is patently absurd (especially when one takes ISU's low salaries into account).

Here's another example of Fletcher's mismanagement: after instituting ridiculous parking fees, many people stopped buying permits and many of the lots were empty. Now one of those improvement projects (funded by a donor, I believe) is going on the lot next to Frazier Hall. The construction looks like light towers, although the lot is already well-lit; the bases make 48 spaces unusable.

A few years ago that lot was full; now it has at least 48 empty spaces! This is not good management. But it is the management that ISU has.

This is nothing compared to the rapid and criminal decline in academic standards that others have noted. An ISU education, once a thing of value, is now worthless, even for those few who manage to graduate.

And, where is so-called President Vailas during all this? He hasn't stuck his foot into his mouth for months!

Hey June Bug,
Want to know the real kicker. . .those Saudi students who are partying all night and flying around town in their $40,000 cars. . .most of them are paying in-state tuition.

So, your parents and family members pay taxes into the system for years, in part, to build and maintain ISU, and international students who have never contributed a dime to the state of Idaho (and many of whom contribute mightily to the decline in ISU's educational standards) pay exactly what you pay for your education.

This is the ISU way, now. Cut budgets for education, increase prices, provide an ever diminishing product. The place is a disaster that barely functions for students. Of course, the corrupt SBOE doesn't care about students. They only care about crushing faculty and teachers.

Well according to the ISU website (http://www.isu.edu/future/costs.shtml) the cost for a year of undergraduate education at ISU is $6,070 per year, not including class fees. And class fees can add several hundred dollars, especially for online classes. Some program fees can be in the thousands.

So, the Affordable Colleges Online "recognition" listed above must be based on data at least several years old. And Fletcher should have none not to "brag" on data that is invalid.
